Rail and TransitProject Description
The project consisted of converting the existing mail dock east of Track No. 13 in Los Angeles Union Station to a passenger-loading platform. A ramp and stairway are to be constructed on the south side of the station to provide access to the proposed platform in order to connect to an existing pedestrian tunnel that extends from Los Angeles Union Station to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) rotunda.
Construction of the ramp and stairway would consist of excavations of approximately 20 feet deep adjacent to active railroad tracks. In addition, a shade canopy is to be constructed along the length of the platform. Diaz•Yourman & Associates (DYA) performed a field investigation, which involved careful coordination with the operators of the facility to avoid existing utilities and tunnels. The primary geotechnical considerations were the presence of non-engineered fill and potential caving of sandy soils during construction of the proposed ramp and stairway. DYA recommendations, summarized in a report, addressed lateral earth pressures, shoring, pier foundations (canopies), and corrosion potential concerns.
