Project Description
Diaz•Yourman & Associates (DYA) provided geotechnical services for aircraft carrier berthing studies in Apra Harbor, Guam. Two locations (the former ship repair facility and Polaris Point) for the proposed project were considered during this conceptual-level phase of the project, with two options for planning based on geotechnical considerations for each site. The first option consists of a pier extending from the shoreline into the harbor. The second option consists of a marginal wharf located along the existing shoreline. The project required a mud line elevation of -50 feet mean lower low water (MLLW) at the face of the pier or the wharf for either site.
The purpose of DYA’s services was to provide conceptual-level geotechnical input to planning. The scope of our services consisted of:
Reviewing data from previous investigations to estimate the characteristics of the existing subsurface materials
Providing conceptual-level conclusions regarding the following:
Seismicity including liquefaction potential and effects
Dredging considerations
Pier/wharf support type
Cut and fill stability
Preparing a written letter report
