Project Description
DYA provided geotechnical and construction services for a new Albertsons market in Carlsbad, California. The project consisted of a single-story commercial building of approximately 61,000 square feet. Geotechnical services included data review, a field investigation, laboratory testing, analyses, and a written report with conclusions and recommendations for construction. This project was located at a difficult site, with geotechnical concerns including settlement of large-diameter gravity pipelines for the adjacent water treatment plant, settlement of undocumented fill and clay deposits, expansive soils, pile foundations installation needed to reduce the load on adjacent pipelines, pavement design, and changing conditions as the project progressed. DYA prepared finite element analysis to examine settlement of existing utilities due to new building loads and was involved in the recommendation to install rammed aggregate piers to mitigate long-term settlement for the market. Other recommendations addressed expansive soils, bridging over soft sub-grades, and pavement thickness design over shallow utilities, buoyant forces on grease interceptors, slope backfill, retaining walls, and installation of vapor retarders. During construction, contractor’s and owner’s concerns were addressed in a timely and easily understood manner. DYA’s recommendations provided the owner with considerable savings, which allowed the project to move forward.
